DON’T COUNT YOUR CHICKENS…
Nothing proved that old cliche more than the race between Harry Truman and Thomas Dewey in 1948. Virtually every poll predicted an overwhelming victory for Dewey. Life magazine went so far as to publish a picture of Dewey before the election with the title “The Next President,” and the Chicago Tribune, so sure of Dewey’s victory on election night, printed and distributed an early edition with the headline “Dewey Defeats Truman.”

How much more of this are we going to take? That little prick takes every opportunity to provoke us, and we keep letting him. I know, I know, we just need to sit down and talk to him, apologize for our freedoms, maybe even give them some nuke technology as a show of good faith. Bad, bad America!

Why are Republicans so depressed? President Bush’s two-term presidency enters its last year in pretty good shape and with a lot better record than pundits would have us believe. The Democrats took Congress in 2006, but they appear to have blown their chance, with approval ratings at historical lows. The Republican presidential candidates are solid, especially compared to the Democrats. President Bush has built the foundation of what could be a Republican dynasty for another American Century. The greatest threat to that prospect has nothing to do with the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy. The Republicans have nothing to fear but a discouraged Republican base.
