Colorado Christian slayer update: Gunman died of self-inflicted gunshot wound

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 11, 2007 03:39 PM

JEANNE ASSAM Several readers e-mailed last night about this detail involving the Colorado church shootings before it had been confirmed; now it’s hitting the wires:

The man who killed four people at a church and missionary training center died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound, police said Tuesday.

The anti-gun extremists who are desperate to shoot down Jeanne Assam’s heroism will grasp at this detail as vindication somehow. But if not for her courage and her steady aim, he would not have gone down:

Matthew Murray, 24, was struck multiple times by a security officer at New Life Church Sunday but died after firing a single shot at himself, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office concluded after an autopsy.

Volunteer security guard Jeanne Assam shot Murray after he entered the church. Investigators had earlier suggested his death could have been a suicide, but credited Assam’s bravery with averting a greater tragedy.

You’ll note at the end of the AP piece another attempt to discredit Assam:

Also Tuesday, Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said Assam was fired from the Minneapolis force in 1997 for lying during an internal investigation. Sgt. John Delmonico, president of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, said police were investigating a complaint that Assam swore at a bus driver while she was handling an incident on a city bus.

The thanks you get…

… and I’m sure that he would have shot himself before using up that 1000 or so rounds of ammunition if he hadn’t been shot, right? Whether he delivered the final shot or not, he died because Jeanne Assam, the HERO OF THE DAY, shot him and stopped him from killing anyone else. He was there to do a lot more than kill two people and die. He wanted to kill dozens, scores, or even more. She stopped him.

If he finished himself off, it was only because he saw that he couldn’t kill anyone else.

I know Jeanne, from having dated her in the past. She truly loves God with all of her heart . Although she enjoyed serving in the ministry at her church, she still felt her calling was “to serve and protect” as a law enforcement officer, which she missed. When I heard the gunman was brought down by a volunteer security officer at the church where Jeanne attended, I had no doubt she was involved. I am a Commander on a large law enforcement agency with 29 years experience. I know what it is like to be involved in a shooting. Her courage and bravery are remarkable! Especially taking on an assailant armed with an assault rifle! She undoubtedly saved numerous lives without any regard for her own.

My take is Ms. Assam is NOT an “armed security guard.”

She is a member of a group of private citizens meeting for a common purpose who were about to be slaughtered.

She happens to have a government permission slip to posses and carry a handgun. And…There’s the rub: Citizens need permission to legally carry a weapon effective enough to protect her own life and the lives of unnumbered others.

When will I need to get a nanny state permission slip to excercise my other rights? Does the MSM suggest permission be obtained for excercise of the 1st amendment? Well…Yes, if it concerns the establishment clause; and No, if it concerns the speech, press, assembly, and petition clause and most of our other constitutionally protected rights.

The legal doctrine that the federal government may establish what it deems “reasonable restrictions to balance public safety with private liberty,” regarding 2nd amendment rights is hooey. “Reasonableness,” to Gun Fearing Wussies, demigods, and the Brady Bunch means confiscation of all firearms and ammunition, and the ban on manufacture and importation of anything other than sharpened sticks. Or rocks.

Imagine for a moment this kind of tragic incident occurred at a meeting of reporters or publishers. How do you suppose the coverage might be different? Would reporters mention that the hero had been fired from, for example, the New York Times, for lying? Would the NYT release such information if that were true?

Call me slow, but the language “…shall not be infringed.” seems straight forward to me. The argument that the clause regarding “A well regulated Militia…” conditions the right, is a “well regulated” lie. That well respected conservative, Laurence Tribe, (sarc) agrees. Of course he uses more refined language than I am able to muster at the moment.

Jeanne Assam should be awarded public honors by the President and congress.

    Best wishes
